Custom Molded Fiber Lids for Tubes and Containers
THECA develops custom molded fiber lids and protective end caps for compatible paper, plastic and composite tubes, mailing formats and other containers. Each component is developed around the real container interface—not only its nominal diameter—including the inner and outer rim dimensions, bead or wall profile, dimensional tolerances, engagement depth and intended removal direction.
Depending on the application, the lid geometry may engage inside a tube, overlap an outer rim or serve as a protective top component within secondary packaging. For compatible paper-based tube systems, a fiber-based lid may provide an opportunity to reduce the use of a conventional plastic end cap and create a more consistent packaging material system. Material composition, fit and the intended end-of-life route must still be confirmed for the complete pack.
Molded fiber lids should not automatically be described as liquid-tight, moisture-resistant, food-contact approved, tamper-evident or barrier-performing. These functions require an appropriate container interface, material specification, construction, testing and documentation. Retention, removal, nesting, stacking and packing performance are evaluated using actual containers and prototypes before series production.

Molded Fiber Lid and Tube End-Cap Applications
This solution can be evaluated for:
- Paper mailing and postal tubes
- Paperboard, plastic or composite tube formats
- Industrial tubes and cores requiring protective end coverage
- Dry-product containers where contact requirements permit
- Retail, presentation and secondary packaging
- Container separation and top protection during transport

Technical and Operational Benefits of Molded Fiber Lids
Container-Specific Fit
The lid geometry is developed around the actual container rim, inner and outer diameter, wall profile and dimensional tolerances. This supports controlled retention, removal and repeatable placement rather than relying on a nominal tube diameter alone.
Plastic-Free Mono-Material System
For compatible paper tubes, a molded fiber lid can replace a conventional plastic end cap and enable plastic-free tube packaging. The lid and tube can form a paper-based mono-material system that does not require the user to separate a plastic component before disposal.
Certified Circular Fiber Material
Under THECA’s approved material specification, the lid is 100% recyclable through established paper-waste streams and is produced from FSC-certified fiber. The material is also biodegradable and compostable under the conditions covered by the supporting analyses and documentation.
Moisture-Resistant, PPWR-Aligned Design
The moisture-resistant fiber structure supports validated transport and storage conditions without being presented as waterproof or liquid-tight. By replacing a fossil-based plastic cap, the solution can contribute to a lower packaging CO₂ footprint and support a PPWR-compliant packaging configuration focused on recyclability, material efficiency and plastic reduction.
Material System and Customization Options
For compatible paper tubes, THECA molded fiber lids can be developed as the closure component of a plastic-free, paper-based packaging configuration. When the approved lid and tube specifications are compatible, the complete pack can follow a mono-material approach in which the fiber lid remains with the paper tube for collection through the paper-waste stream.
Based on THECA’s approved material specification and supporting studies, the lid is fully recyclable with paper waste and is produced from FSC-certified fiber. The material is also biodegradable and compostable under documented conditions. Its moisture-resistant structure supports suitable transport and storage applications, but moisture resistance should not be interpreted as waterproof or liquid-tight performance.
The project brief should define:
- Intended function: protective end cap, transport lid or container closure
- Container inner and outer diameter
- Rim, bead, flange and wall geometry
- Dimensional tolerances at the engagement area
- Internal, external or top-protection interface
- Lid depth, overlap and engagement distance
- Required retention and removal behavior
- Grip tab, finger access or removal edge
- Nesting, denesting and stacking requirements
- Manual or automated placement method
- Plastic-free and mono-material packaging objective
- Paper-stream recycling requirements
- FSC-certified material specification
- Expected moisture exposure
- Biodegradability and compostability requirements
- Surface, color and identification requirements

From Container Interface to Verified Series Production
1. Pack and Material-System Review
Review the container dimensions, rim and wall geometry, current plastic cap, packing process and intended end-of-life route. Define whether the project aims to create a plastic-free closure, a paper-based mono-material pack or both.
2. Lid Design and Mono-Material Integration
Develop the engagement, overlap, retention, removal and nesting geometry around the actual container. For compatible paper tubes, the lid and tube are evaluated together so that the fiber cap can remain with the tube during paper-waste collection without requiring material separation.

3. Performance and Environmental Validation
Test fit, retention, removal, nesting, stacking, operator handling and moisture exposure using the actual container and packing process. Confirm recyclability with paper waste, FSC material documentation, biodegradability and compostability evidence for the approved material specification.
Where a CO₂ reduction claim is required, compare the molded fiber lid with the defined previous packaging component using the same functional unit, application and system boundary.
Review certificates and analysis reports.
4. PPWR and Production Approval
Finalize the approved container-and-lid configuration, material specification, quality controls, environmental claims and supporting documentation before series manufacturing. The validated packaging configuration is developed to support applicable PPWR requirements for recyclability, material efficiency and reduced reliance on avoidable plastic components.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Is the Correct Lid Size Determined?
Nominal tube diameter is not sufficient on its own. Provide the inner diameter, outer diameter, rim, bead, wall profile, engagement depth and applicable tolerances. Physical samples are recommended because paper and composite tubes may vary within the same nominal size.
Can the Lid Create Plastic-Free Tube Packaging?
Yes, for compatible applications. A molded fiber lid can replace a conventional plastic end cap and enable a plastic-free closure system. The complete package should still be reviewed to confirm that no other plastic components, coatings or accessories remain in the claimed configuration.
Can the Lid Support a Mono-Material Packaging System?
Yes. When the molded fiber lid is used with a compatible paper tube, the lid and tube can form a paper-based mono-material packaging system. This allows both components to follow the same intended paper-waste collection route without requiring the user to separate a plastic cap.
Can Molded Fiber Lids Be Recycled with Paper Waste?
Yes. Under THECA’s approved material specification, the lids are 100% recyclable through the paper-waste stream and can be collected together with compatible paper tube packaging. Local collection and recycling instructions should still be considered in the market where the package is placed.
Do Molded Fiber Lids Support PPWR Compliance?
The lids are developed to support PPWR-compliant packaging configurations by enabling recyclability, material simplification and the reduction of avoidable plastic components. Final compliance must be assessed for the complete package, its intended market and the responsibilities of the company placing it on the market.
Are the Lids Made from FSC-Certified Fiber?
Yes. THECA’s approved lid specification uses FSC-certified fiber, supporting responsible sourcing within the documented supply chain. The applicable FSC claim and certification information should be confirmed for the commercial specification supplied to the customer.
Are the Lids Biodegradable and Compostable?
The approved fiber material is biodegradable and compostable under documented conditions. The applicable environment, test method and disposal guidance should follow the supporting analysis and should not be extended to conditions that have not been verified.
